One of our (many!) favorite days here at the SD Discovery Center is Water Festival, the longest running annual event we offer. Started in the mid-1990’s by former Education Director Terry Lewis, the Water Festival has provided hands-on water education to over 5000 4th graders.
This year’s Water Festival will be on Tuesday September 27. We will have our usual exciting activities from the City of Pierre Water Department and Fire Department, plus special new activities that will help 4th grade teachers meet standards about Earth Systems and soil using a fun, exciting game the Incredible Journey.
The Water Festival consists of two sessions, a morning (9am – 11:30am) and afternoon (12pm – 2:30pm). During each session, groups attend five (5) 25 minute presentations. Our presenters are staff and volunteers from different agencies and organizations that relate to water such as the Izaak Walton League, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the City of Pierre, and of course the SD Discovery Center staff.
This Water Festival will be a little bittersweet in that with the new science standard the Festival will be for 5th graders in future years. But since we aren’t quite ready to give up our relationship with the 4th graders we will be putting our heads together with the teachers to figure out something to do just for them!
If you are a 4th grade teacher in the Central South Dakota area or a parent of 4th grader and would like to learn more about Water Festival, please let us know.
