The South Dakota Discovery Center houses the Environment Education Center of South Dakota. The EECSD promotes and disseminates environment education through capacity building and educator development.

South Dakota Envirothon
The South Dakota Discovery Center coordinates the South Dakota Envirothon, a competition for high school students based on natural resource skills and knowledge. Students compete in five areas: aquatic ecology, forestry, soils, wildlife and a current issue. State winners move to the North American competition. South Dakota Project WET
The South Dakota Discovery Center is the state sponsor for Project WET (Water Education for Teachers). Project WET is an international water education resource which is dedicated to educating students about all aspects of water. The South Dakota Discovery Center uses South Dakota Project WET as part of its outreach on watershed protection.
South Dakota Leopold Education Project
The Leopold Education Project uses the writings of Aldo Leopold, primarily A Sand County Almanac to help students explore and think about the natural world. Participants will learn to “read the landscape” and in the spirit of Leopold use their journals to record data, make observations, analyze situations, reflect on questions. The South Dakota Leopold Education Project is offered as a part of the outreach on watershed protection.
